Couldn't decide if i wanted this very 80s silk dress when I first laid eyes on them.

Once again, it was a decision of fabric and cut that won me over.

I came home and snipped off the shoulder pads, added my coach leather belt and Voila... it became such a pretty dress..very 1920s vibe especially with the layers of beads and bangles! And I just read the New York Times about how swinging flirty skirts are back!

I love this painting on the side of the building just a block from where I live... it is about people.... and the people you meet in New York are really something!
Crazy, loud, funky, hip, creative, passionate, driven, brutally honest and most of all Inspiring!

Despite the reputation of New Yorkers... I really dig the energy of the people here.
I have been lucky in meeting lots of inspiring, creative and successful people who are just so passionate about what they do and generous with their friendship.

Today, I've added some beautiful items to Philo's collection ( a great piece of 80s Giorgio Armani pants and a black leather coach belt), all from a friendly vendor I met at a flea market...she is an unassuming fashion stylish who works as a stylist on movies (with BIG international stars whom I shouldn't name) and I am not surprised that many of the items I got today came from actual movie sets worn by the big stars. ( Yes, I have done my research and she is certainly telling me the truth!)

My other great finds from the past week are from a very reputable vintage store near my apartment... a spunky lady who shared with me how she is a personal friend of a famous fashion designer in Paris whom she sends vintage clothes to as inspirations for his collections year after year! I was so awed by the beautiful items in her shop and spent nearly 2 hours inside browing and listening to her share her story and love of vintage with me.

The people you meet in New York..ah.. they are all really something.
Thank you for the inspiration and the friendship.
And more importantly, I know I will be getting some great stuff for all of Philo's regulars when I get back... direct from New York... all with a story to tell!

Once again, I was proven wrong! These vintage dresses have a way of tricking me!

My initial thoughts about this vintage 60s shift was a huge A-line dress with two front pockets and box pleats..and I was baffled about the low pockets, did the original owner had long long arms???

Later, I realized how wrong I was!

While trying it on, I realised that this pretty dress is very similar in style to a 50s sun dress if you wear a small size--the sash has to be tied at the waist to give it the full skirt look. However if you fit a larger size, this dress will just fit like a perfect a-line dresss with the same sash tied at your waist... tricky tricky, but so clever isn't it?

.....and did we mention how fabulous the prints are?

Fits medium to almost a large-36-29-38.

Lots of room in this one, you just need to tie the sashes accordingly to your waist and voila!

Flattering dress that will garner you lots of flattery!

With original metal zipper that zips up back.

I wasn't too sure when I first picked up this dress, but I fell in love with the beautiful fabric and quality of the cut.

On closer inspection, the tag says made in Spain, and I am quite sure it is of good quality as the fabric and cut are of high quality.

I absolutely love how the chiffon contrast with the structured cut of the dress... the floral prints add a whimsical vibe to the whole dress making it flow...very much like a painting...

On my way to shop for groceries, I was terribly distracted by all the pretty shops that dotted SOHO while navigating the small streets.. Look at what I found!

A Brand New Kate Spade bag (it comes with the tag intact) from a lovely consignment store along Elizabeth street!

This bag is so practical, with its lightweight nylon material, and the leather trim is an added touch of class!

I grew up watching adverts of stylish ladies in trench coats, toting the likes of these 80s classics... and eventually a voice-over that simply went: Etienne Aigner!

Despite its size, it is Very roomy! You don't have to lug around big bags anymore!

(I could fit my wallet, scarf, gloves, cellphone, keys and make-up in as a trial! )

In excellent condition! I can't seem to find anything wrong with this handbag, not even any obvious scratches nor stains and it still has a whiff of that leathery smell!

I caught the Jacket bug! I have to admit I have a weakness for jackets and how they complete an outfit.

Tips for choosing the right jacket for you!

Rule number 1:

Shoulder Pads

Bear in mind to ditch big shoulder pads (So eighties!) and boxy cuts if you are not tall enough to carry it off. But if you are blessed with a tall, slim figure, by all means, steal your boyfriend's or husband's jacket and pair them with short flirty dresses.

Rule number 2:

Getting the right Fit

More importantly, the cut has to fit your frame and height. You can wear them fitted or loose, just make sure it comes with ALOT of cool attitude!

Chop off the sleeves to 3/4 length or simply fold them to show off interesting lining.

The key is to project a chic but fun vibe...getting serious is so overrated!

Rule number 3:

A COLOR that suits your skin tone..

A well-made black jacket is an indispensable wardrobe must-have, you cannot go wrong with black. Go White if you want something different, but bear in mind not too look like a medical professional! Invest in a well-cut and luxurious white pants suit, it can look incredible.

Of course if you are adventurous, do colours, stripes or even polka dots?

I just met a guy who walked out of a vintage outlet with a $5 colourful Paul Smith look- a- like jacket... and he looks incredible in it!

Rule number 4:

Invest your time and money..

Invest in a good jacket if you can afford it, you cannot go wrong with the big names... Chanel, Gucci or YSL... better still if they are vintage!

Stores like BCBG, Max Mara, Club Monaco, Calvin Klein, Zara or Mango usually sell pretty well made suits which don't cost an arm or a leg. The key is to look for fabric that looks expensive and you can mix and match with some of your vintage finds. A cute floral dress to offset the matronly effect of a serious jacket. Experiment!

Source your locate vintage outlets or trawl the internet-the only set-back for this method is that you cannot try them- not that it has stopped me in any way!

My personal favourite vintage brand for suits is by Lili Ann. There are lots of incredible 40s and 50s suits sets; only thing is they are getting very expensive and hard to find. Still, the search goes on! Make the effort and enjoy the process of dressing up and dressing right!

The photos above feature one of my own jackets from the wonderful suit designers of the 50s-70s, Adolph Shuman For Lili Ann. It took me almost 6 months to find the right jacket.. it is really a lot of time and effort taken, perhaps even, luck.

I took a walk down Broadway and I found incredible fabric, lace and vintage buttons!

Back to the days when my partner and I used to churn out funky necklaces and accessories under our label BeadcadelicS, which we sadly had to say goodbye after two years of success due to other commitments.

This dress has never been worn nor sold.

I bought it from a vintage fair in Brooklyn from an awesome lady with a great collection of brand new vintage from the 50s and 60s....all with tags attached.

Fly away to a different time and zeigeist in this cool and simple dress.

Sincere apologies for the grainy pictures, my trusty camera has been destroyed from the journey from Singapore to NYC! Still, fashion waits for nobody!

Here, I have an all new H&M blue (it is really sort of light navy blue) very very full skirt in polyester mix-- almost like chiffon.

This skirt will work on those of you looking to add more bulk to your slim frame; but steer clear of it if you are not tall enough to carry it off, cos we won't recommend any fashion nos nos here at Philo's.

Pair it with a tiny cardigan in bright red or just a simple cute tee!

It will fit a small size (size4- 6) and it's really fun to swish and swash around in this cutie! Plus it's really one of the most comfortable skirt I have ever tried on.

A walk through central park on a cold winter day got me musing about my closet and me.....

It's time to say goodbye to more of my beloved vintage treasures.

I should let go of more of my collection to those of you whom I know will wear these precious beauties with pride and joy (my dear husband is almost squeezed off our limited closet space--no thanks to me...:)) Couple of days ago, somebody remarked to me that she is thankful that I am sharing my bountiful finds with her at such affordable prices. Indeed! Indeed! She got lucky cos she is such a dear friend and I happened to pull out stuff that I have not worn in years on the day she popped by for coffee.

I am constantly reminded by someone(??) that since I ship in so many clothing at one time, it's only fair that I share since I can't keep everything for myself. Which is totally right!

(After all, I only keep those I absolutely cannot do without--which works out to be quite a lot..!!)

Well, I am indeed humbled that people around me appreciate my taste in choosing outfits for them, and we always have a good time trying out clothes and sharing a laugh; talking about life while having a cuppa.

I always like to think about how others would wear these outfits to mark the meaningful journeys of their lives--birthdays, quiet dinners, celebrations, even a mundane day at work--having a nice outfit to perk up your senses and confidence is just so great, isn't it? (Plus, I heard that many of you have received compliments on your outfits from Philo's?)

I like to think that each piece of garment from Philo's tells a piece of history.
